Little Lion Goes to School is being used in classrooms as a tool for fostering discussions on self esteem and diversity.  The book has been approved as a supplementary text by the New York City Board of Education.  It has been leveled for use in 2nd – 4th grade classrooms, though teachers have been independently using the book in classrooms from pre-K to 5th grade.

Teachers report that Caribbean students respond to the book particularly well because they identify strongly with the main character.   The book’s rhyme scheme and vivid illustrations have made it a popular choice among students.

The book has been integrated into curricula in subject areas including Language Arts and Social Studies, and has been used to spur classroom discussion on the following themes:

  • Diversity and tolerance
  • Self esteem and self expression
  • Family relationships (particularly, father-son relationships)
  • Importance of parent-child communication

Our Teachers’ Guide reflects ways in which the book is being used in schools in Caribbean and American schools in the New York area.  In addition to classroom use, the book also is being used in workshops with parents and trainee teachers.
