In [“Little Lion at Bat”] you have, apart from the opportunity to practise all the literacy skills, hilarious pictures – entertainment; new knowledge – the game of cricket; conflict between two school teams – nail biting tension and excitement; [and an] understanding of other people’s lifestyles. So you have values galore, not preached at the children, because that doesn’t work, but woven into the story in glorious rhythm and rhyme, along with heaps and heaps of fantastic, wonderful words, tumbling one after another in a delightful dance. [“Little Lion at Bat”] will bring joy to your children even as they learn that it’s not the size of the person or one’s outward appearance, but the spirit inside the person that makes all the difference. Adults will also enjoy reading it and sharing with their children the pure fun of this experience. I think that this generation of children will remember this book with a smile, long after they are grown up, even as our children remember the Dr. Seuss books. Mrs. Diane Browne -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another inspiring message for all youngsters from Little Lion! With its rhythmic flow, colourful artwork, and a story that all kids can relate to, Little Lion’s latest adventure will be an entertaining read for all. Donna Francis ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Magnus has made another much needed contribution to the collection of Caribbean children’s literature. “Little Lion at Bat” highlights some of the many aspects of Caribbean culture in which our children can take pride, while sharing the rich culture with children from other backgrounds. The text and the illustrations are engaging for children and adults alike. “Little Lion at Bat” certainly helps to bring cricket to life for those of us who are not fanatics. We can all be proud of the strong, clear voice Magnus has created in little Zachariah Zion. Charissa Fernandez ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At last! Another “Little Lion” book. My son has been waiting for this since “Little Lion Goes to School.” He’s really excited about this Little Lion story, especially because he loves cricket. We can’t wait for the third book. Cherryl Hanson Simpson ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Little Lion at Bat” is a lovely read for many reasons. It is entertaining for all ages [and] it is culturally sound as it memorializes cricket greats to a generation that didn’t know them. Hugh Douse |
